Status Quo of and Problems in Delimiting of Livestock/Poultry Breeding Forbidden Zones in China

Abstract:

Delimiting livestock and poultry breeding forbidden zones is an important step towards optimization of spatial distribution of animal husbandry production and protection of the ecological environment. A summary of how it is done in China was presented based on its basis and history; comparative analysis performed of differences in the range of forbiddance specified in the livestock and poultry breeding forbidding programs between regions after the promulgation of the "Ten Water Pollution Control Policies"; and then problems currently existing in the delimitation discussed systematically. The main ones are:(1) the definition of species of forbidden livestock/poultry and limitation for scale of breeding farms are not as specific; (2) the setting up of the ranges of forbidden zones is irrational and description of the initial boundary is not explicit; and (3) the environmental elements under consideration for setting zones are not uniform. In the end, the authors bring forward some suggestions for programming of delimitation of livestock/poultry breeding forbidden zones in the hope that relevant administrations would use them as reference for programming and implementing delimitation of livestock poultry breeding forbidden zones.
