Effects of Compost Combined With Amendments on Available Copper and Cadmium in Soil and Their Accumulation in Romaine

Abstract: Effects of 4 amendments[biochar, phosphate rock, calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and attapulgite] combined with compost on copper (Cu) and cadmium (Cd) concentrations in romaine and available Cu and Cd in a Cu-Cd contaminated soil were investigated in a pot experiment. The results show that although amendments could decrease the available Cu and Cd concentrations in soil, while because of the activation by compost, amendments combined with compost still increased available Cu and Cd concentrations in soil compared with the control, but they decreased Cu and Cd concentrations in romaine by 4%-28% and 2%-35% respectively, and the remediation efficiency of CaCO3 combined with compost was better than other treatments. Relativity analysis show that compost alone and amendments combined with compost could inhibit the uptake and transport of Cu and Cd by romaine, thus reduced their accumulation in romaine.
