Spatio-temporal Heterogeneity of Rural Construction Land and Population Patterns in Ningxia

Abstract: With the decline of rural population in the rapid urbanization, the human-land relationship in vast rural areas is becoming increasingly decoupled, which seriously hindered the process of rural revitalization and makes it extremely urgent to systematically study the patterns of human and land use. Stemming from the Tapio decoupling model, this paper emphatically analyzed the evolutionary pattern of rural construction land and population in Ningxia from 2010 to 2018. The results imply that:(1) Rural construction land in Ningxia expanded in the first 5 years and then decreased in the following 3 years, with the land use structure being constantly optimized. (2) The total size of rural population in Ningxia was shrinking with the migration from mountainous areas to plains and from suburban counties to urban areas. (3) The human-land relationship in rural Ningxia varied across counties/districts, which was hereby classified into 7 decoupling types and dominated by the strong negative one. In general, the mismatching trend of "construction land expansion with population decline" was obvious in rural Ningxia, and particularly in the southern mountainous areas. Furthermore, this paper employed the LMDI model to investigate the influencing factors of the aforementioned dynamic trend of human-land in municipal-level cities. We argue that the expansion of rural construction land was jointly driven by the intensive use of rural construction land, urbanization level, and the total population size in general. Specifically, the impact of intensive rural construction land use was significant in Yinchuan, Shizuishan, and Wuzhong. The urban-rural structure of total population, to certain extent, inhibited the expansion of rural construction land in Guyuan and Zhongwei. Thus, it is of great importance to regulate the rural human-land relationship by scientifically promoting the comprehensive consolidation of rural construction land according to local conditions.
