Abstract: The value of biological species resources can be divided into value of direct economic utilization, value of research and development, and value of conservation of the resources. The values of conservation and utilization of the biological species resources were estimated with Jiangsu Province as a case for study. Results show that the gross output value of all biological species resources related industrial sectors in the three industries was up to 9 829.89×108 RMB·a-1,with added value reaching to 2 548.15×108 RMB·a-1,accounting for 16.43% of the gross domestic product of the region.Protection and utilization of the right of new plant variety resulted in the increasing of gross output value of the three industries by 125.44×108 RMB·a-1.The income derived from the biological species resources was distributed among the holders, research and development institutions, seeds dealers and farmers in the ratio of 1.0∶5.3∶455.9∶6 265.4.Based on protection and utilization of the patents of biological species resources, the agriculture and the pharmaceutical industry increased the gross output value by 8.88×108 RMB·a-1.The potential economic utilization value of the wild biological species resources of the province was around 1 646.49×108 RMB,and the value of their function of serving the ecosystem reached 1 613.54×108 RMB·a-1.
