Abstract: Eight sampling sites were selected out of the six types of secondary forest typical in the low mountain regions in North Jiangsu and vegetation composition of the woodlots was investigated and the soils therein were tested for comparision in physio-chemical properties. Results show that in these regions,Pinus densiflora forest,Pinus thunbergii forest,Platycladus orientalis forest, and Robinia pseudoacacia forest were the major types of secondary forest, quite simple in vegetation composition;Soil hardness varied from woodlot to woodlot, ranging from(11.57±5.26) to(20.92±6.91) kg·cm-2;in bulk density, clay content, and field moisture holding capacity of soils under evergreen coniferous forests were lower than under deciduous broadleaf forests;the formers displayed acidity, while the latters alkalescence;as to the soil nutrition, the soil under Robinia pseudoacacia forest was relatively good in hydrothermal condition, and high in soil organic matter,N and P content and in soil nutrient supplying capacity as well.
