The effect of mid season aeration (in 8 days starting at the end of the rice tillage) on methane emission and the relations of soil moisture and oxidation reduction potential ( Eh ) to methane emission of rice fields were investigated in hilly area of Jurong, Jiangsu province in 1997. A peaked methane flux was observed at the beginning of the mid season aeration and the emission decreased rapidly to nil afterwards. The methane increased gradually after the recovering of floodwater layer, but the fluxes did not reach that before the aeration until harvesting. The decrease of methane fluxes was related significantly to the decrease of soil moisture and the increase of soil Eh after the start of the aeration. The fluxe peaks and the total emission during the mid season aeration were not significantly related to the N application rate, but related to the rice straw which was amended when the preceding winter wheat was sown The total methane emission during the mid season aeration accounted for 3.86%-13.92% of those emitted during the whole rice growth period.

Transgenic escape is a kind of risk accompanying with the release of engineered plants. High risks of transgenic escape have been found in some crops. The paths for transgenic escape have been analyzed, and the factors affecting transgenic escape are discussed. The transgenic escape risks of main crops in China have been preliminarily evaluated, and the countermeasures for avoiding and reducing transgenic escape have been proposed.

The biodiversity and habitat diversity of the Yellow River Delta Nature Reserve were reviewed, and factors which damage and threaten the biodiversity of the nature reserve were analysed. Measures for making species of the nature reserve exist and develop sustainably, and for providing research base for wetland biodiversity conservation and sustainable utilization, have been proposed.

Changes of chemical forms of REE in the profiles of red soils with different parent materials and changes of soluble REE contents show that availability degree of REE in red soils is higher than that in other soils, the mean total content of soluble REE accounts for 6%~7% of the total amounts of REE, and the main source of available REE is correlative to the adsorption of clay minerals and organic matter in red soils to REE.

The average contents of trace elements Zn, Cu, Mo, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, As and Hg in some herbaceous plants in Hainan province are tested to be 40.49, 8.39, 7.16, 2.47, 1.24, 1.50, 0.85, 0.71 and 0.07 mg/kg, respectively, so we can find that their orders are Zn>Cu>Mo>Pb>Cr>Cd>Ni>As>Hg. The contents of trace elements in Paspalum commersonii and Elephantopus scaber are high, while the contents in Schizachyrium sanguineum and Imperata cylindrica are usually low. Mo, Hg, Cd, Cu, Zn are easy to transfer, their coefficients of absorption are usually higher than 1.0. Cr, Ni, Pb, As are hard to transfer, their coefficients of absorption are all mostly lower than 0.3. The contents of trace elements in herbaceous plants are affected by the species of the plant and the soil environment.

Some principal proposals for the protection and improving of environment were also introduced.

The production structures of the three“Global 500 Roll of Honour of UNEP”ecological villages in Zhejiang province and the unification of social benefits, economic returns and ecological results obtained from the readjustment and optimization of the structures were introduced. It have been indicated that the correct construction roads of eco agriculture are to develop industry in the light of local conditions as well as to turn the single agriculture system to be the higher effective and integrated diversified agriculture system consisting of agriculture, industry and commerce. The development of village owned industry is the key to the economic growth. As long as the industrial construction projects are properly chosen to develop, better economic benefits as well as social and environmental benefits could be gotten.

Industrial ecology is a promising science that has recently been popularized in Western countries. It follows and develops the theory of natural ecosystem which is used for guiding industrial activities being in risk. There are some similarities and some big differences between industrial ecology and the eco agriculture that is presently advocated in China. After a comparative analysis on the different ideas and practices of industrial ecology between the Western countries and China the strong and weak points of them have been described.

Pesticide residues in six food groups were examined. The residues of the study indicated that organochlorine residues were detected in almost all examined food groups with the highest residue in plant oil. All residues were lower than the maximum residue limit (MRL). Organophosphorus residues were only detected in vegetable samples. The highest residue was found in root vegetables (radish). The residues in leaf vegetables were higher than that in fruit vegetables and flower vegetables. The mean residue levels of phoxim and mathamidophos in vegetables exceeded the MRL. Pyrethroid residues such as deltamethrin and fenvalerate were low. Fungicide residue was not detected in vegetable samples.

The semi-arid region of China has an area of 2.2×10 6 km 2. Water shortage in this area is the core but not the only resistance to the sustainable development of agriculture. To use energy and all kinds of resources effectively, to protect environment and to keep the ecological balance of the nature should be paid great attention so as to realize the sustainable development of agriculture. The extensive development of rural yard-economy is necessary in this region. After making a discussion on issues related to sustainable development of agriculture, a new model of yard-economy was developed on the basis of our recent years studies.
