Besides of the main function of conserving natural resources and the environment, nature reserves generally have many other functions such as providing bases for scientific research, conservation publicity and public education and acting as demonstrations for sustainable use of resources. The designing and division of the functional zones of Changbaishan Mountain Biosphere Reserve on the bases of the management objectives of the Reserve had been completed and are expounded in the paper. The effects of integrated function of the Reserve for conservation, research, publicity, education and sustainable utilization are also revealed. The management experience of the Reserve could be a good reference for the other reserves of the same category.

Taking geomorphology and vegetation characters as the bases, the southern part of Shandong Province has been classified into five landscape types and fifteen landscapes subtypes. According to the similarities and the differences between the landscape types, index systems of sparse vegetation and forest vegetation landscape and dry farming and dry land crop paddy rice rotation landscape were selected for the ecological evaluation of landscape subtypes. After those indices been graded and weighted, a composite evaluation index (CEI) had been worked out. With the CEI, the present ecological situation of the landscapes were classified into three types: normal landscape (CEI>0.70), critical landscape (0.50 < CEI ≤ 0.70 ) and extremely critical landscape (CEI ≤ 0.50 ). The areas of the three types of landscape accounted for 37.9%, 17.5% and 44.6% of the total area of the southern part of Shandong Province, respectively. It has been concluded that the landscape ecology of this area should be restored imminently.

The field long term location testing method was used for the study of the mineralization, accumulation and balancing of soil organic matter in corn field with fertilization and plastic film covering. The results of the study showed that the mineralization rates of soil organic matter varied from 1.07% to 4.38% in field condition. Fertilization and plastic film covering have been proved in the study to be good for the accumulation and balancing and can increase the mineralization rate of soil organic matter. In the study, net accumulation of soil organic matter had been occurred in all the treatments except the control. It has been predicted that continuing stable application of organic fertilizers for years could significantly improve the balance of organic matter in soil.

Within the two years of testing period, the total litterfall of the Rhodomyrtus tomentosa shrubland were calculated to be 429.3 and 525.2 g/m 2 respectively for each year. In the litterfall, there had been significant differences between the amount of woody materials and the flower fruit materials, but had no obvious difference between foliage materials and other materials. The average contents of N, P, K in litterfall of the shrubland in the two years were 2 845, 164 and 892 mg/m 2 respectively. The quantity of and the nutrients contented in the litterfall of the shrubland were less than that of those in tropical and subtropical evergreen broadleaf forestes, but were comparable to that of those in Pinus massoniana forests. It has been found that climate change had a great effect on the seasonal dynamic changes of quantity and nutrient contents of the shrubland litterfall. The results of the study on nutrient utilization efficiency showed that Rhodomyrtus tomentosa shrubland had a higher nutrient utilization efficiency than tropical and subtropical evergreen broadleaf forests and Pinus massoniana forests had.

As a part of the Nationanl Key Science and Technology Project, comprehensive analyses of agro-forestry complex ecosystem had been carried out in Raoyang Experimental Area of Huanhuaihai Plain. The results of the experiment show that the ecological environment has been improved owing to the establishment of agro-forestry complex ecosystem. The sandy, windy, dry, poor soil and low crop yield area has been changed into an environmentally sound area with high yield. The complex ecosystem improved the local climate, reduced the CO2 and dust concentrates of the air and increaased the number of birds in this area. The forest coverage of the area had been increased from 2% to 20% and the crop yield had been increased from 1500 kg/hm2 to 7500 kg/hm2.The area has become a demonstration area for integrated management in low and medium yield areas of Huanghuaihai Plain.

On the bases of eco-economics principle, the structure, function and the characteristics of eco-economic system of Dianwang Village, Zhenyuan County, Gansu Province have been analyzed. It has been pointed out that the fragile ecosystem and the irrational economic structure are the major causes of the vicious circle of eco economic system of the village. Countermeasures and approaches for realizing the improvement and development of both ecological system and economic system of the village have been proposed.

An improved bioassay method was used for the study of the effects of soil microbial, soil temperature and soil moisture content on the degradation rate of Chlorsulfuron in Gleyed sandy loam soil(Taihu Lake paddy soil)with the pH value of 5.46.The results of the study showed that:(1)the degradations of Chlorsulfuron in different treatments were all coincident with the first-order kinetics equation;(2)the degradation rates of Chlorsulfuron in non-sterilized soils were obviously higher than in sterilized soils;(3)the degradarion rates of Chlorsulfuron increased with the increasing of soil temperature and soil moisture content. Its half-lives were between 0.7 weeks and 5.8 weeks.

From the point of ecological view, the theory of sustainable development (SD) has been discussed. The developing course, the connotation and the perspectives of SD have been analyzed. It has been concluded that:(1)it is the ecological crisis coming from the over stressed economic development, the over using of natural resources, and the uncontrolled destroying of natural environment by human beings that promoted the emerging of SD; (2) the ecological principles such as holism, harmony, ecosystem, suitability, stability, ordering, circulation and regulation are the theoretical bases of SD;(3) ecological engineering which includes eco planning, eco technology and eco management in a broad sense is an effective approach for realizing sustainable development.

The safety of biotechnology (biosafety) has aroused grave concerns of the international society gradually. The big difference of biosafety capacities among different countries makes great divergence of views on the contents and forms of international legislation on biosafety. The focal points of their arguments such as advance informed agreement (AIA), risk assessment and risk management, information exchange and other related issues have been expounded and analyzed. The development trend of international legislation on biosafety has also been discussed.

The traditional nomadic way of production in Tarim River Basin has caused serious problem of irrational drawing of water from Tarim River, thus resulted in the waste of water resource and the difficulty in environmental management of the area. The settlement of nomadic herdsmen and the integrating of farming with animal husbandry could be of great help to the improvement of the peoples life there and to the environmental control of the region. The conditions of the region that favorable to the settlement of herdsmen are: rich of light and heat resources, large area of arable land, high quality of grasslands along the Tarim River which are suitable for the development of artificial grasslands ,great potential of water resource, and the limited population of herdsmen.

Township and village industry (TVI) plays an important role in rural ecosystem. With the rapid development of TVI, the discharge amount of pollutants from TVI has been dramatically increased. The TVI pollution has become one of the major factors that have restricted the sustainable development of rural economy. For improving the rural eco environment, the primary issue is to prevent and control TVI pollution. On the basis of Qinhuangdao TVI pollution source investigation, the main causes of TVI pollution have been analyzed, and the practical measures for prevention and control of TVI pollution have been proposed.
