Based on the results of research on the effects of cropping patterns on soil productivity and soil environmental of cropping patterns on soil productivity and soil environmental quality in soil erosion areas, resource accounting and simulation modelling methods were used for discussing the evaluation models of different cropping patterns for sustainable farmland use. The results of case study in Wenxi County of Shanxi Province showed that the evaluation models are feasible and successful for continuous evalation of agriculture.

Abies yuanbaoshanensis is an endangered tree species which distributes only in Yuanbaoshan Mountain, Rongshui County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It has been found that the endangerment of Abies yuanbaoshanensis is mainly caused by climate changes. In addition, the ecological environment of the community, the human activities and the low seed germination percentage are also important causes to the endangerment of the species. It has been suggested the while taking strict measures for the conservation and management of the existing habitats, artificial supplementary regeneration should be lunched and reforestation of Abies yuanbaoshanensis trees should be implemented in appropriate habitats.

Xiangzikou Weishan is located in hilly red soil areas of Southern China. Water induced desertification there used to be quite serious as a result of integrated effects of long term human irrational activities such as over cutting, steep slope reclamation, etc. The natural conditions such as the plentiful of precipitation, the relatively concentrated occurrence of rainstorms, the hilly character of the area and the granitic bedrock are all the other causes. However, measures have been taken to control desertification since 1982 and remarkable ecological and economic benefits been achieved. The measures taken include: (1) combining closing hillside with afforestation to rehabilitate vegetation; (2) solving the problem of rural energy source shortage through multiple approaches; (3) changing slopeland for farming into for forestry; (4) extensive publicizing of combating desertification; (5) reinforcing institutional framework; (6) implementing of the concerned policies; (7) reinforcing the supervision to prevent desertification.

Field investigations and laboratory analyses have been conducted for the study of the physical and chemical properties of copper mine tailings with different piling times and the status of vegetation rehabilitation in Tonling Copper Mine. The results of the study showed that with the laps of time, there were changes of physical and chemical properties in the upper layer tailings. The changes including the increase of stabilization, the amelioration of substrate structure, the increase of water holding and fertility keeping capacities, the descent of pH values and the increase of concentrations of organic matter, total N, available P, available K, available Cu and water soluble salts. Sometimes the decrease of pH values could result in acidification of the surface tailings. It could be concluded that the status of vegetation rehabilitation on copper mine tailing heap is closely related to the lapse of time and the changes of physical and chemical properties of the surface tailings.

By making the comparisons of chemical fertilizer and pesticide application rates in different provinces and typical regions, and by adopting field investigation and sample testing study approach, the status quo and the trend of chemical fertilizer and pesticide non point pollution in hilly red soil region of Southeast China have been analyzed in various aspects. The results of the study showed that this kind of pollution in Zhejiang, Guangdong and Fujian provinces was more serious than in other provinces owing to relatively higher application rates of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The application rates are increasing dramatically in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and in Hunan, Hainan and Jiangxi Provinces, though the rates are not high presently.

Facing water resource deficiency, diversified economy has been adopted by agriculture department of Qara Tikanlik Irrigation District. Its economy is dominated by cotton, fruit and deer production. The reinforcement of water conservancy projects, developing and saving of water resources, enhancement of management and oasis protection are also playing very important roles in maintaining the stability of oasis and promoting the development of oasis agricultural economy.

The countermeasures for the control of water pollution caused by pesticides and chemical fertilizers from a golf course have been proposed. The countermeasures were worked out on the basis of the analyses on the status of chemical fertilizers and pesticides applying on the golf course. A simplified model has been adopted in the study for the evaluation of the impact of chemical fertilizers and pesticides on the adjacent water environment under normal condition and under the most unfavorable condition.

Isotope dilution method was adopted in lab for the study of the effect of crude oil contamination on the rate of nitrogen mineralization and nitrification in soil. The results of the study showed that the organic nitrogen mineralization rate was not significantly affected by crude oil, while the nitrification process was delayed owing to the presence of crude oil. After 10 d of incubation, the number of ammoni oxidizing bacteria in soil with no crude oil been added increased from 1.6×103 to 1.6×106,while in the soil with crude oil added the number of ammoni oxidizing bacteria only increased to 1.6×104. In another test, the number of soil ammoni oxidizing bacteria was 2.6×106 before test, then adding crude oil, after 10 d of incubation the number of bacteria declined to only 10% of that ofthe original one.

The results of pot experiments showed that the difference of Fe and Mn contents in diffe rent paddy soils was one of the most important factors which made the differences of methane emission amounts of different soils. It has been found that the effects of soil Fe and Mn on soil methane emission were caused by affecting soil Eh and root plate.

Effect of La on growth of Glycine max seedling under Cd stress have been studied through pot culture experiments. The results of the study showed that root application of 200 ml CdCl 2 solution(with the concentration of 500 mg/L CdCl 2) for each pot could result in significant inhibition on the growth of Glycine seedling. While only one time spraying of 30 mg/L LaCl 3 solution on the leaves of seedling previous to the addition of Cd could greatly reduce the damage of the seedling caused by Cd.
