There are rich species resources and manifold ecosystems in the middle part of Yaluzangbu River Basin due to the unique highland climate and varied topographic features. These species and ecosystems possess very high value of conservation and utilization. A planning for biological diversity conservation in this particular area has been proposed on the basis of species resource and ecosystem surveying in this region.

The characteristics, causes of seasonal drought in Southern China and the combating countermeasures are discussed in the paper. The results of the study show that the characteristics of the seasonal drought are: the frequency and intensity of drought have been increasing and the surface soil drought occures simultanously with dry and hot season; the main causes of seasonal drought are: the time difference of distribution of rainfall and evaporation, the limited space of red soil for water storage, the shortage of available water and the high water demend of crops; the key combating countermeasure is: to establish a drought combating technical system which takes the water resource exploitation and water saving as principal measures and takes the reducing of water consumption and the increasing of water utilization ratio as supporting measures.

Based on the production experience and the results of located experiments in sandy soil areas along the lower reaches of Changjiang River in Jiangsu Province, the comprehensive techniques towards sustainable agriculture, i.e developping multi cropping system, practicing rotational tillage, improving soil fertility with foliages or wheat and rice stubbles, adopting labor saving and high efficient cultivating techniques, are suggested in this paper. It is of great significance to the sustainable agriculture development in lower or middle yield regions in China.

The discharge of phosphorus mine tailling from the mines around the proposed Qingping Reservoir has been investigated, the investigation involes the quantity and distribution of the mine tailling. The successive five months water quality monitoring data of four cross section of Mianyuan River indicated that serious water pollution has been caused by eluvial runoff from phosphorus mine tailling piles. The results of river sediment sample analyses showed that with the influence of the tailling, the Cd, Pb, P and F contents of the sediments were all heavily exceeding the standards. The average phosphorus concentration was 9892 mg/kg. It has been concluded that the mine tailling must be well managed and its pollution must be well controlled, otherwise the new built Qingping Reservoir will have to face the problem of eutrophication.

Using fluvo aquic sandy loam soil, adding metsulfuron into soil by diffusion, conserving water content of 35% and cultural temperature of 25℃±1℃, selecting sensitive Keng rice variety and measuring the rice length after six day′s culture could obtain better repeatation for metsulfuron soil bioassay. The residue of metsulfuron had harmful effect on rice seedling′s root growth for rendering rice root of the treatments shorter than that of the controls. The sensitivity of rice varieties to metsulfuron showed the following tendency: Conventional Keng rice (Japanica rice)>Glutionous rice and Hybrid Keng rice>Conventional Hsien rice (Indica rice)>Hybrid Hsien rice. The impact of soil metsulfuron residues on rice seedling′s length reached 0.01 significant level at 0.5μg/kg for almost all rice varieties being tested.

The effects of the changes of Dongting Lake on agro-eco-environment of the Lake area have been discussed. It is concluded that the changes of the Lake has brought into a series of eco environmental problems such as the decline of the lake effect, the increase of the frequency of flood and water logging, the more serious of soil gleying, the prevalence of snail fever and the damage of aquatic resources. The strategy and the countermeasures for protecting and improving of the agro eco environment have been put forward.

The application of principles of ecology and scientific theories of farmland ecosystem management in the integrated control of pests and diseases for tea gardens have been discussed. It is suggested that ecological control i.e. agricultural control and biological control should be the major measures. By adopting various agricultural technologies and modern biological scientific measures, ecological control could minimize the consumption of chemical pesticides, consequently, the environmental pollution and the pesticide residue could be reduced, the natural enemies of pests could be protected and finally the ecological balance of tea gardens could be maintained.
