The regional effect of northern Jiaiigsu coastwise shelterbelt on temperature is analysed by using the method of puralistic regression. It is found that in winter, the temperature increascs in the morning and slightly decreases in the afterncon, contrary to the summer. The effect on temperature is related to the over rate of standing timber and dominant wind direction of seasons.

Through field trials and laboratory experiments, the laws of atrazine degradation and metabolism in soils andtheir relationship to soil characteristics are reported. The results shown, atrazine would be degraded up to 90 % in thevegetation period after its application. The metabolic pathways would be affected by the soil acidities In alkaline soil, atrazine broken down through microbial metabolization. In acidic soils, atrazine degraded mainly through chemicalhydrolysis. The degradat ion product was mainly 2-hyd roxyatrazine. The half life of atrazine in acidic soil was 63 days, much shorter than in weak acidic soil(DT50 = 84 days). Whereas in the alkaline soil, the half life of atrazine was theshortest(DT50=51 days).

The degradation of aldicarb and its metabolites in soil at different conditions were studied and discussed.Theresults showed that aldicarb degraded rapidly in various types of surface soil with corresponding T0.5 at 3 to 8 days. TheT0.5 of total residue including aldicarb sulfoxide and sulfone ranged from 30 to 65 days. The main factors effectingaldicarb degradation were temperature and the activity of soil micrcorganism. In deep soil which temperature and organicmatter content were lower,T0.5 of aldicarb and total residues were observed to be 34 to l20 davs and 159 to 686 davs re-spectively.And aldicarb sulfoxide was much more difficult to be degraded into sulfone.

Residue and degradation characteristic of isoproturon in the wheat and wheat field soils were studied for ayear at two places. The results of experiments showed that isoproturon was degraded fast in the wheat plants and soils, the halflife of isoproturon was 3~4 days in the wheat plants, and 8~14 days in the field soils. The residue levels in thewheat seeds were lower than 0.04 mg/kg by the wheat harvest, and below MRL that is suggested 0.5mg/kg,when25% isoproturon was applied to the wheat fields at 7.5 kg/hm2 in next February.

The 14C-bensulfuron residues in soil and plant were studied by using nuclear trace method. The results show that the half life of bensulfuron is 28 days, and one rice season(98 days)after normal application of bensulfuron, its residue in soil and rice were 1.5μg/kg and 11.63 μg/kg respectively, that are much lower than the allowable value,It is concluded that the normal application of bensulfuron is environmentallv safe.

One year s lysimeter experiment with soil column cultivated for rice and rye grass was conducted to compare the impact of sludge and common fertilizer(urea, superphosphate ) on crop growth and groundwater qualitv,The results showed that N and P from sludge had a pronounced reidual effect as compared to that from the fertilizer. In the oerid of rice growth, the N and P contamination in groundwater was not discovered, but NO leaching through soil profile was noticeable in period of rye grass growth due to applicatlon of sludge and fertilizer,in which the later would produce much more NO3 than the foimer. It is concluded that the undigested liquid domestic sewage sludge could be applied to paddy soil in certain conditions and by certain amounts with no harm of N,P pollution to groundwater. On the basis of the de-mands of crop for N and P without impairing the groundvvater quality.

The degradation rate and residual time of various types of sanitary pesticides on housing materials have beenstudied. The results show: toxicity of pyrethroid insecticides the chief components of sanitary pesticides are high toxic tosilkworm. SOS/Umu test is recommended to the study of genotoxicity of househood sanitary pesticides. This method issimple, accurate, and the toxicity could be evaluated according to the induced rate of enzyme. The dose-response relation-ship is noticeable.

Based on a large amount of investigatlon data of rock types and death cases of erophagus cancer, the relation-sliip between mortality of emphagus cancer and rock types in the living areas of people have been studied. The resultsshowed that the mortality of esophagus cancer closely related to rock types. The mortality is positively related to metamor-phic rock, carbonate rock, Quaternary friable rock and red clastic rock, and negatively related to magmatic rock, but has no correlation with clastic rock.

On the bases of Taixian county environmental protection strategic obectives for the year 2000, the indexsystem for quantitative assessment of progress in the fulfilment of the objectives has been selected and defined in accordancewith the representativeness, scientific reliability, policy guidance and operativeness of the indexes. There are 17 indexesincluded in the system, and the whole system could be divided into four sections: industrial pollution control, town envi-ronmental quality, agricultural eco-environment quality and economic development. The scoring method for periodical as-sessament has been advanced.

The biodiversity of any region today is the result of complex historical interactions among physical and socialforces over time. Virtually, the region which has rich biodiveristy,is not certainly covered by vegetation of climax types;those regions including all serial communities alway, have greatest biodiversity. The paper deals with biodiversity conser-vation through discussing the influences of physical changes and human activities on regional landscapes.

The microbial preparation EM has been used as an additive to chicken manure compcot for decompositioncomparison tests. The results show that the NH-N contents of EM treatment are 41.86% (10 days)to 56. 71 %(20days) less than that of the controls and the NH-N emitted from EM treatment reduced significantly. In the late peri-od of EM treatment composting,a relatively strong brewery fragrance could be smelled, indlcating its high efficiency ofodor control. In addition,it can shorten the pollutlon-free treatment period to 20 days. Those effects are resulted fromEM introduced outside microbials.

Cowntribution share of science and technology progress to environmental pollution control during 1980~1993 in Jiangsu province has been analysed by using the estimation model of science and technology progress. It is found that the contribution share of science and technology progress to environmental pollution control accounted for only 6.84 % ,far less than the share it should have contrihuted.
