Abstract: The effects of covering and planting on soil eco-environment,such as water,salt,nutrition and temperature,andon barley growth and yield were studied in the coastal area ofJiangsu. The results showed that in the dry spring,the mulchcould reduce soil water evaporation,restrain soil saltaccumulation.lower soil solution concentration and too soiltemperature,and increase soil available nutrition. The crop plant-ing could reduce soil water due to barley transpiration,but soilsalt and solution concetration were still lower than those withoutcrop. The pot-culture experiment results also showed that themulch effectively promoted barley growth and significantly raisedbarley yield.
