Abstract: By making the comparisons of chemical fertilizer and pesticide application rates in different provinces and typical regions, and by adopting field investigation and sample testing study approach, the status quo and the trend of chemical fertilizer and pesticide non point pollution in hilly red soil region of Southeast China have been analyzed in various aspects. The results of the study showed that this kind of pollution in Zhejiang, Guangdong and Fujian provinces was more serious than in other provinces owing to relatively higher application rates of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The application rates are increasing dramatically in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and in Hunan, Hainan and Jiangxi Provinces, though the rates are not high presently.

Key words: chemical fertilizer, pesticide, water pollution, Southeast China, hilly region
